What’s the Desire of Your Heart?

Psalm 37:4, Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

What are the desires of your heart? Our habit as sinners is to desire things that gratify our sinful, fleshly desires. We might say we desire Christ, but as the values of the world bombard us with their false ideologies, we begin to lose our desires for things that concern the Spirit and move towards those our flesh desires. No matter how hard we try, deep down we desire something more than Christ. What is it that you desire? Is it money? Is it sex? Is it drugs? Scripture promises God will give us the desires of our heart, but only if we delight in Him. Desiring anything that does not delight in Him does not guarantee its deliverance. If we desire anything that is a perversion of God’s will, He will not give it to us with His blessing.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, however, God can inform the desires of our hearts. Our deepest desires must submit to God’s will. “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act” (Psalm 37:5). My biggest desire is to share my life with a woman of God who is serious about her faith and relationship with Christ who is also willing to date and consider marrying a future pastor. That kind of woman is a lot harder to find than you think. I get about as much attention as a white crayon, and at times it frustrates me. I have realised, however, that I’m not trusting God’s timing with it. I need to commit my ways to Him and just trust Him, and He will act. If I do this, I have faith He will deliver this desire of my heart.

Of course, we will always fall short of loving and serving God and our neighbour. However, when we commit our ways to the Lord and trust Him, His Holy Spirit will grant us the desires of His heart. In my blog, God’s Very HeartI described Jesus as God’s very heart—His only dear Son. By faith we commit to God and trust Him, who fills us with His Spirit, and thus grants us Jesus Christ. The thing we should desire the most is Jesus above all. If we desire and seek Him above all things, the rest will follow (see Matthew 6:33).
